Ball Machines make perfect practice partners, but they're also very good at filling up the tennis court with tennis balls in next to no time. A Tennis Ball Mower is an ideal antidote to this problem, and is the quickest most efficient way to get your tennis balls back in the hopper and ready for another practice session.
Tennis tubes and ball pick up hoppers will get the job done - eventually, but to maximize the time you spend hitting tennis balls and minimize the time you spend picking them up, you'll need a tennis ball mower.
All ball mowers have huge arms to gather as many balls in one sweep as possible. Tennis balls are then channeled to the center of the machine before being drawn upward to be deposited in the detachable hopper ready for use again. The full ball hopper can then be lifted up to hang on the hooks on the upper handles, as shown on the Gamma Ball Mower to the right.
Other common features include hinges to allow the arms to fold inwards when passing through narrow gateways, and mechanisms for easy arm detatchment to enable storage in confined spaces.
Tennis mowers are made of durable materials like aluminum, fiberglass and toughened plastic to resist the elements and damage from fences and uneven court surfaces and edges, yet are still light enough to easily direct around the entire court area. They're also designed to be 'gentle' enough not to inflict any damage on the court themselves.
Most tennis ball mowers fall in the 30 - 40lbs range, so are quite portable, and
are easily rolled to court over fairly even ground usuing the same wheels that make them maneuverable on a tennis court.
Whilst Tennis Tubes are able to pick up one ball at a time, your tennis ball mower will 'eat up' hundreds in minutes. With tennis machines able to shoot out up to 300 balls+ in under 30 minutes, a ball mower could allow you to practice your tennis strokes for a much larger portion of your available time.
They're a significant investment at nearly half the price of a reasonable portable ball machine, but are built to last for years so it's a one-off expenditure. If you're a beginner with a basic ball machine, a tennis ball mower is more than you'll need, but if you're a competent player serious about making efficient use of your practice time, then a ball mower will allow you to to concentrate on your game for longer.
For a tennis instructor or tennis club, they make very good sense for clearing up the court after coaching or practice sessions with minimum effort and time.
