Playmate Tennis Ball Machines are known best for being exceptionally durable, high end, mains powered machines, suited particularly to the demands of tennis instuctors and high usage clubs and schools.
But Playmate now have a couple of ball machines at the portable end of the scale called the Volley and Half-Volley, that run on batteries. The Volley is the 'big brother' of the Half-Volley with a larger battery, a wireless remote and a 2 line firing function to add more variation to your tennis drills.
Playmate have cleverly allowed you to upgrade the more affordable Half-Volley, one feature at a time, to eventually become the Volley if the $1695 is a bit of a stretch initially. (The Half-Volley is $1195).
Though the Volley is lighter than the other heavyweights in the Playmate family, it's not so light compared to it's portable rivals - it tips the scales into the mid 50lbs, whereas the heaviest Lobster ball machine is 44lbs.
So it's probably going to appeal more to the young, fit and muscular and to those who appreciate the sturdy, built-to-last aluminum construction and high grade tennis ball delivery wheels. Incidentaly, these robust wheels tolerate tennis ball variation better than most, and will deliver old/new/pressurized and pressureless balls with equal aplomb.
The two year warranty that comes with the Volley shows how confident Playmate are in it's durability, and the powerful battery should allow you to test it's strength daily for up to six hours, where many of it's rival portable machines would have required a trip to the charger long before.
You won't have to spend much time reading the Volley's Instruction Manual because it's been designed for easy operation: Just adjust the ball feed rate dial between 1 and a very leisurely 20 seconds (indicated 1 - 10), set the delivery speed between 20 and 60mph (indicated 1 - 10), and if you want more variation, add top or backspin or instruct your Volley Ball Machine to throw balls to two court positions with the 2-line dial.
The 2 Line dial set to wide will give you a strenuous workout as your Volley fires up to 200 tennis balls in succession left and right to the corners of the court. If you're not feeling so energetic, or just want to concentrate on technique rather than tennis on the move, set the dial to narrow or turn the oscillation off.
The Playmate Volley makes your life a little easier when you come to recharge the battery: It separates effortlessly from the machine to allow positioning near the power source. The inclusive Smart Charger will prevent any overcharge and prolong battery life.
The Playmate Volley is for people who like the idea of buying a ball machine engineered by the company that makes high quality, durable machines designed to take 'punishment' of multiple daily users and long operational hours.
It has enough variety and features to improve the tennis of almost any level of player - the two line throwing facility and contrasting spins in particular should challenge your game.
Where some ball machines struggle with any tennis ball variation, causing jams and irregular deliveries, the Volley's high grade ball launching wheels should provide years of dependable accurate service. The single function delivery on/off remote control is similarly reliable and saves unneccesary returns to the machine.
Where the Volley doesn't score so well is in it's weight - it's one of the heavier battery operated ball machines - and it hasn't got the speed and 'real play' variety of say the equivalent Lobster Elite 3 model, with it's simultaneous horizontal and vertical oscillation for all court coverage.
