The SAM P1, like the other SAM Ball Machines is a durable dynamic tennis 'partner' to promote your tennis game. It's closely related to the highly successful, great value iSAM model, but the extra $300 or so it costs buys you quite a bit more ball machine.
In particular, the SAM P 1 is fitted with a powerful battery giving you up to 4 hours court time, and able to eject the tennis balls at a pacey 75mph+. This same battery also helps apply the heavy top and backspin available on the P1 to give your tennis game a more realistic workout.
For those who really like to get their pulses racing on court, with the dial set to 'oscillation' the huge 300 tennis ball hopper will allow your P1 to deliver balls randomly accross the entire court for the best part of half an hour before reloading. Depending on your fitness, the ball pickup time might come as a very welcome break!
The P 1 Tennis Ball Machine will not test your powers of reasoning to get it delivering tennis balls to you - it's been designed for simple operation. But it's simplicity belies it's considerable scope to get your tennis game moving in the right direction.
Just adjust the three dials to get your desired levels of ball speed, feed rate and if needed - spin, though if you set to zero, the p1 will deliver balls without it.
There's a bit more manual adjustment possible to the height or elevation of the ejected ball, so overhead practice is possible, and to the width of the oscillation sweep, where you want to practice your shots on the run.
If you'd like extra-high ball deliveries to really build confidence in all your overhead game, there's an optional accessory for about $50 to significantly boost the elevation of SAM P1's deliveries.
All SAM Tennis Ball Machines are built sturdily and engineered to last, but the downside of this is they're a little heavier than comparable competing models from some other makes. The SAM P1 with the Hopper on is in the upper 50lbs range which could prove a handful for some men, and most women. It has a towing handle and a couple of small wheels, but a luggage cart would help if the journey to court is anything but short and even.
Like it's smaller cousin, the iSAM, the P1 is great value for money at only just over $1000, with speed, spin and other variation to challenge the tennis skills of all but the best players.
The most popular portable battery version will allow you to take your tennis practice to a place and at a time of your choosing. But I like the way that you can choose an AC mains alternative, or for a small extra charge, you can have both alternatives. If you're able to find an outlet, the SAM P1 will even operate when the battery is totally dead with this last option.
Like the Lobster Elite range of Ball Machines, the hopper inverts after use to fit snugly over the machine to help with transportation and to protect it's more delicate parts. Unlike the Lobster Elites, the smart battery charger is included in the price.
Though the P 1 is definitely designed for portability and wouldn't trouble an athletic young man to lift, the Lobster Elite 1, Tennis Tutor and Wilson portable models with a comparable performance are at least 10 lbs lighter, so the SAM P1 is more for those that value robust engineering.
The SAM P1 used to be known before 2006 as the Prince Portable Model 1 so it's a tried and trusted design known for it's durability. If weight isn't an issue then the P1 will surely give you endless hours of tennis practice, fitness exercise, or just simple fun!
