Sports Tutor produce the highly popular and comprehensive Tennis Tutor range of ball machines for tennis covering just about every skill level and budget. From the aptly-named 'Tennis Twist' beginner machine, through the 'Cube',and 'Prolite' machines, the intermediate level Tennis Tutor 'Plus', 'Plus Player', and 'Tower' to the top-of-the-line 'Shotmaker', there's a model to match your needs.
Part of Tennis Tutor's success lies in the suberb range of ball machines it can offer - the entry level machine Tennis Twist is an incredible $229, and is perfect for introducing a youngster or newbie to the game. The 'Shotmaker' at the other end of the scale has enough variety in it's shots to challenge the best and would suit a tennis club or school, but you'll need to invest $3000 - $4000 to secure it's extensive services.
The Tennis Twist is the perfect, fun way to gently introduce a beginner to the basic strokes of tennis without wasting any money on features that would be too challenging to the new player's abilities.
It feeds it's 28 balls, all queued-up and ready to go in a mini Helter Skelter design, (hence the name 'Twist'), at a comfortable 12-18mph, just right for beginners to practice the forehand or backhand repeatedly.
With 8 hour + batteries and AC Power option, it will enthrall and test the endurance of even the most active child, almost guaranteeing a sound night's sleep!
At only 11lbs in weight, you can take it anywhere with the battery option. It'll even save a Dog owner's throwing arm by tirelessly lobbing tennis balls at your pampered pet until it wished it knew a new game.
The Tennis Tutor Cube bridges the gap between the basic Twist and the so called 'Professional' models. It's twice the weight of the Tennis Twist, and just over twice the price, but it's still very portable is much more than a 'one trick pony'.
The simple control panel allows you to alter the ball delivery rate from two to ten seconds, the ball speed from 10 - 50mph and the ball elevation. There's even a 10 second delay before firing to allow time to take position on the opposite side of the net - a feature not found on some more expensive machines.
With the inclusive smart, no-overcharge battery charger and the option of an oscillator to launch balls to your left and right, this is quite a scope for such a compact tennis ball machine.
Portability is still to the fore with Tennis Tutor's 'Professional range, but these machines have enough 'firepower' to challenge and hone the tennis games of competant tennis players.
The ProLite is about as light as Professional machines go, the electric model weighing in at only 22lbs, the battery alternative only 29lbs. It's able to put a little more 'zip' on the tennis ball delivery than the Cube, with a top speed of 60mph.
With the addition of the optional oscillator, and the integral manual elevation control, you'll be able to instruct this dynamic little tennis machine test your forehand, backhand and even your overhead smash.
The Tennis Tutor and Tutor Plus models bring a little more to the table again, with the choice of substantial extra pace on shot speed up to 85mph. To cope with this potential extra demand on it's 'energy reserves', there's a heavy duty battery option, giving 4 -6 hours of court time.
A built-in wireless remote is available on both machines. The 'stop/start' feature will save you from having to return to the machine every time you want to pause to catch your breath, and the remote also controls the side-to-side oscillation of the firing mechanism.
As well as the 'random' horizontal sweep of tennis ball launching, the Tutor and Tutor Plus offer two-line options, (consecutive forehand to backhand), and a wide two-line feature for yet more variation of shot.
The main 'plus' of the Plus model is the ability to spin the ball with 'top' or 'under' (back) spin, which is a more realistic 'game-like' experience, but as with every ball machine, extra features mean extra weight and size. The Tutor Plus weighs about 50lbs, still portable but not lightweight, and the spin facility adds 8 inches to the height of the compact 12 inch basic model.
The cream of the professional , the 'Plus Player' packs two very powerful extra attributes: the first allows you, at the press of just one button, to simulate the tennis play of a real opponent at three levels of ability - beginner, intermediate and advanced.
The advanced setting shoots the balls out faster, deeper and nearer the edges of the court, for example. You're able to customize each level with your own speed, spin and elevation settings to simulate more variation in your opponent's play.
The second highly desirable feature is the multi-fuction wireless remote option, which displays EVERY function on the machine's control panel in the same position for ease of use. This will ensure that all your energy is expended in practicing your tennis shots, not trooping back and forth to repeatedly adjust settings.
The Tennis Tower has been designed with the home court owner in mind. There are four alternatives to choose from, across a range of performance similar to the Tennis Tutor - Plus Player above.
As it's not intended to travel so far, the Tennis Tower is less portable and only runs on AC power, where there's a choice of battery or AC in the above tennis ball machines. It's hopper capacity is larger though, at 225 balls, giving you plenty of time to hone those tennis strokes before reloading.
All the optional fancy features of the Tutor Plus and Plus Player are available, like spin, a 2-line narrow and wide function, real player simulation and two or multi- function remote controls. A particularly user-friendly quality is the 10 segment ball elevation angle display, which will allow you to quickly and easily adjust the trajectory of the delivered balls to your favored position.
Recommendations don't come much higher than that of the Association Of Tennis Professionals, (ATP), who use these tennis machines at their training center in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
The Shotmaker is built to withstand the 'punishment' meted out by talented tennis athletes who want to extract every ounce of improvement in their performance with lengthy grueling practice sessions, that can take their toll on man and machine alike!
It goes without saying that such a machine would likely be all you'll ever need for the tennis court at home.
